Bangkok.- An armed man stormed a school in southern Thailand on Wednesday and opened fire, taking students and teachers hostage, provincial authorities reported.
The armed assailant entered the Patong Prathan Kiriwat school in Hat Yai city, in the southern province of Songkhla, around 4:45 p.m. local time (09:45 GMT) and fired two or three rounds of shots, after which he held teachers and students, indicated the Provincial Public Relations Department on its Facebook account.

The Police are trying to control the situation in the area, without knowing how many people are inside the school or if there are any victims. Southern Thailand has been a common scene of attacks in recent decades due to an insurgency by separatist groups who claim independence for some areas of Songkhla and three provinces, predominantly Muslim.
