Israel begins demolition of 100 homes in Jenin, in the northern occupied West Bank

Jerusalem.- The Israeli army deployed bulldozers this Thursday in the Jenin refugee camp, in the north of the occupied West Bank, with the aim of demolishing about 100 homes in the next 72 hours, Basheer Metahen, spokesman for the City Council, confirmed to EFE. Metahen.

"The demolition of approximately 100 homes was reported in the next 72 hours (...) The demolition was announced three days ago and today the Israeli forces began" with it, Metahen said in a text message exchange.

The official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, reported the arrival overnight of reinforcement troops to the camp and excavators to carry out the demolition of at least 95 houses in different areas, especially in the western neighborhood and Al Sikka and Abdullah Azzam streets. The Israeli army has so far demolished 600 homes in this refugee camp, the epicenter since January 21 of a military macro-operation dubbed Iron Wall by Israel. Around 22,000 people remain displaced from the Jenin camp due to this operation, which Israel justifies as an attempt to dismantle the local Palestinian militias (Jenin and Tulkarem, both in the north, are considered their strongholds). The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) estimated in 2023 that the camp's population was about 24,000 people. Since the operation began in Jenin, Israeli forces have killed at least 39 people (7 of them minors), according to the count of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), updated as of June 7. Although Iron Wall began in Jenin, a few days later it spread to the Tulkarem refugee camp and the neighboring Nur Shams, both in the Tulkarem Governorate. In addition, the operations of this macro-raid have also affected other areas of the north, such as the regions of Nablus or Tubas. According to OCHA, more than 33,000 Palestinians remain displaced due to Iron Wall in Jenin, Tulkarem and Nur Shams. In total, at least 139 Palestinians have died this 2025 in the West Bank due to Israeli attacks, and 954 since Israel intensified its operations in this Palestinian territory under military occupation following the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023.
