Without a doubt, the tourism sector represents one of the greatest successes of the governments of President Luis Abinader, an area that he already knew well before his arrival at the Presidency of the Republic, due to his experience as a local businessman.
Since his swearing-in in August 2020, the Tourism Cabinet was implemented, coordinated by Minister David Collado, which began to design strategies that would allow, in the midst of a pandemic, to attract visitors to the country, while much of the world remained closed.
Thanks to the work done in the first months of management, the World Tourism Organization recognized the Dominican Republic as the number one nation in tourism recovery after the global health crisis.
The joint work of the public and private sectors was not limited to reopening the country's doors. Their vision was more ambitious: to break records that would further boost the economy, at a time when other sectors were not showing the same dynamism. That is why, in 2023, the country reached for the first time the historic goal of receiving 10 million tourists in a single year, an aspiration that had been proposed in previous governments.
As if that figure wasn't enough, the effective management of Abinader and Collado managed to attract more than 11 million visitors in 2024. Today, in mid-2025, the figures already exceed six million tourists, which could translate into a new record of more than 12 million visitors before the end of the year.
Without a doubt, tourism is shaping up to be the main achievement in the legacy that President Luis Abinader will leave upon concluding his second term in August 2028. At the same time, it will be David Collado's calling card in his aspirations to become the next head of state.
