Wagaman and Jesús Sánchez propel the Marlins to snap the Phillies' winning streak

Miami. The Miami Marlins relied on offensive power and opportunism to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 on Tuesday night at loanDepot park, stopping a five-game winning streak by the visitors and also cutting their own five-game losing streak at home.

The Dominican Jesús Sánchez and Eric Wagaman contributed home runs, while the young Venezuelan Javier Sanoja shone with a triple and a single, scoring two runs and one RBI. Miami broke the tie in the sixth inning with a three-run rally, capped by a run-scoring single from Xavier Edwards, who had a three-hit night. Earlier, Kyle Stowers drove in one with a groundout, and Sanoja extended the lead with a run-producing triple. Sánchez hit his seventh home run of the season in the seventh inning against reliever Joe Ross, while Wagaman hit it out of the park in the second inning, solo, against the Venezuelan starter for the Phillies, Jesús Luzardo (6-3). Luzardo worked 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits, four strikeouts and four walks. Reliever Freddy Tarnok (1-0) earned the win with an effective performance in the sixth.

For the Phillies, the day was marked by the absence of Nick Castellanos, who was relegated to the bench by disciplinary decision of manager Rob Thomson, after issuing an “ inappropriate comment” during Monday's game. The measure ended his streak of 236 consecutive games as a starter.

Dominican Johan Rojas drove in a run for the Phillies with a single, but the visiting offense was contained by Miami's bullpen in the last three innings.

Marlins' Notable Performances:

  • Javier Sanoja: 4-2, 3B, 2 R, 1 RBI
