May 30: Freedom Day in the Dominican Republic, a date to preserve historical memory

It is not established as a non-working day, but it takes on a deep meaning as a symbol of the rejection of authoritarianism and as a recognition of those who fought and gave their lives for the liberation of the Dominican people.

Santo Domingo.- On May 21, 2021, the Executive Branch of the Dominican Republic issued decree 335-21, through which May 30 of each year was declared as "Freedom Day". This official provision establishes an annual commemoration that seeks to keep the historical memory alive and pay tribute to all those who fought for the restoration of democracy in the country, especially those who offered their lives in defense of fundamental rights and public freedoms.

The chosen date has a deep historical significance, as May 30, 1961 marked the end of more than three decades of dictatorship with the execution of the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina. This event represented a turning point for Dominican society and opened the way towards a process of democratic opening, although full of challenges but that would transform the political life of the country.

With the establishment of this day, the aim is to highlight the value of justice, respect for human rights, and the strengthening of the democratic system.

Freedom Day Activities:

According to the decree, the date will be remembered with commemorative acts organized by the Ministry of Education and other state institutions, which will have an educational and reflective character. The objective is to foster in the new generations a critical awareness of the country's recent history, promoting democratic values and the rejection of all forms of authoritarianism.

The declaration of this commemoration is part of the government's efforts to preserve historical memory and ensure that decisive events such as the end of the dictatorship are not forgotten. With this measure, it also seeks to strengthen national identity around values such as dignity, justice, and freedom, essential pillars for coexistence in a state of law.
