Vatican City.– The American newspaper The Washington Post revealed that, ten days before a presumed military operation against Venezuela, the Vatican had tried to mediate so that the United States would stop said action and allow the Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro to go into exile, with destination to Russia.
According to the publication, Maduro would not have accepted the proposal due to his refusal to abandon his closest collaborators. The revelations are based on official documents and interviews with people who participated in the conversations. The media also reported that on Christmas Eve, a meeting took place between Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican and one of the most influential figures of the Holy See, and the United States Ambassador to the Vatican, Brian Burch. The objective of the meeting would have been to explore the possibility of Washington allowing Maduro's departure into exile.
