Saharan dust and trough affect weather: showers with thunderstorms are expected in several provinces

Santo Domingo. The National Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET) reported that during this Sunday a sunny and slightly hazy sky will prevail in most of the country, due to the presence of Saharan dust particles.

However, passing showers, between weak and moderate, are expected in eastern provinces such as El Seibo, Hato Mayor and La Altagracia.

In the afternoon, weather conditions will change due to the incidence of a trough in the upper levels of the troposphere and wind drag. This will generate local showers with electrical storms and possible wind gusts in areas of Monte Plata, Santo Domingo, Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, Santiago Rodríguez and Dajabón. For the night, the rains will concentrate mainly over La Romana and La Altagracia.

According to INDOMET, this weather pattern will continue on Monday, with a mostly sunny environment but slightly hazy due to the persistence of Saharan dust. In the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms will repeat, especially in Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, San Juan, Elías Piña, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, and Monte Plata.

In addition, the agency is monitoring a disorganized system of showers and thunderstorms in the Central Atlantic. Although its probability of cyclonic development is low (around 10% in the next 48 hours), the population is advised to remain attentive to future bulletins.

Finally, INDOMET warned that the thermal sensation will remain quite hot, a product of the time of year and the presence of Saharan dust. The citizenry is urged to take precautions: drink enough fluids, wear light-colored clothing, and stay in cool and ventilated places. It is reminded that children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to high temperatures.
