Deputies approve bill to create new Ministry of Justice

Santo Domingo.– Despite the resistance from the opposition bloc, the Chamber of Deputies approved this Tuesday, in two consecutive sessions and with urgency, the bill that creates the Ministry of Justice, a new governmental entity that will be added to the 23 existing ministries in the country.

The project was approved with several formal modifications to some articles, so it must return to the Senate of the Republic to be considered in a single reading before being sent to the Executive Branch for its eventual enactment.

Although some lawmakers presented a dissenting report seeking to curb the initiative, the majority of the deputies voted in favor of creating the new ministry, arguing the need to strengthen institutionalism and the separation of functions between the Executive Branch and the Public Ministry. It should be remembered that the figure of the Ministry of Justice already existed in the structure of the Dominican State since 1844, the year of the proclamation of the first Constitution, until its suppression on November 10, 1964. At that time, its functions were absorbed by the Attorney General's Office. The proposal has generated debates among political and legal sectors, while awaiting the Senate's decision and eventual presidential enactment.
