Relatives of Jean Andrés Pumarol claim that he suffers from mental health problems

Santo Domingo, RD.– The Pumarol Fernández family confirmed that Jean Andrés Pumarol, identified as responsible for the tragic event that occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the Naco Dorado IV condominium, has suffered from a diagnosed psychiatric disorder for years, for which he was under medical treatment.

During the episode, which according to preliminary reports was the product of an apparent mental crisis, the young man would have attacked several residents of the building, causing the death of Mrs. Ivonne Handal and leaving others injured.

In a statement released by Willy Pumarol, a direct relative of the aggressor, the family expressed their sorrow for what happened and offered their condolences to the victims, especially to the relatives of the deceased.

“We are living through a deeply heartbreaking situation, which affects us from multiple dimensions. Our family member has lived for years with a psychiatric diagnosis, under continuous monitoring and treatment,” the text quotes, in which it is acknowledged that, despite his condition, Jean Andrés had managed to maintain a functional life for more than a decade.

The family emphasized that this episode represents not only profound pain for them, but also a call for understanding of complex realities experienced by many families with loved ones affected by mental illnesses.

"We ask God to fill us with strength in these difficult times for our community, in the face of this incomprehensible tragedy," concludes the statement.

Authorities Investigate

The authorities have not yet offered a detailed official version of what happened or the legal status of the alleged aggressor, who is said to have been arrested after the incident. It is expected that the Public Prosecutor's Office and relevant bodies will determine the actions to be taken based on the clinical history and the events that occurred.
