"The incident remains under investigation and no further information will be released until the investigation is complete," stated the agency, which is southwest of the city of Savannah, where it houses nearly 10,000 people including members of the Armed Forces and their families. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that "they have informed President" Donald Trump of the "shooting at Fort Stewart in Georgia." "The White House is monitoring the situation," it stated on its social media. Security agents were deployed from 10:56 a.m. (14:56 GMT) due to the possible shooting at the military base, the largest installation of the United States Armed Forces east of the Mississippi and home to the Third Infantry Division, which also includes airfields. The site closed at 11:04 hours (15:04 GMT) due to the presence of the active shooter in the area of the Combat Team of the Second Armored Brigade, reported the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield team. The incident, of which there are still no details or identity of the alleged perpetrator, mobilized the FBI, the police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF, in English). The FBI office in Atlanta and Savannah confirmed that "it is aware of the incident at Fort Stewart and is coordinating with the Army's Criminal Investigation Division." Videos shared on social media showed soldiers seeking shelter after hearing the first shots, while nearby schools declared a lockdown to protect their students. Unlike other mass shootings in the United States, a special investigation is expected because it occurred on a military base. The United States has recorded at least 261 mass shootings, in which at least four people are shot without counting the attacker, so far in 2025, according to the civil organization Gun Violence Archive.
