SAN PEDRO DE MACORÍS. – Right-hander Grant Gavin signed this Tuesday one of the most dominant performances of the season by covering seven innings with just one hit and four strikeouts, guiding the Leones del Escogido to a 3-1 victory over the Estrellas Orientales at the Tetelo Vargas stadium.

Gavin needed only 70 pitches to complete his excellent performance, relying mostly on his four-seam fastball between 90 and 92 mph, used in 79% of his deliveries. The American combined that pitch with a changeup (82-84 mph) and curveball (78 mph), faced the minimum of 21 batters and retired the last 17 consecutively.

The Reds scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning against Enny Romero. A single by Erik González to right field opened the inning, followed by a ground ball by Héctor Rodríguez to the shortstop in which a throwing error by José Tena allowed the first run. Rodríguez advanced to third and then scored on a hit by Jorge Mateo to left field.

In the sixth, González was again a factor by opening with a triple to center, then scoring the Escogido's third run via a sacrifice fly by Rodríguez. The only run for the Stars came from a solo home run by Ángel Martínez, connected between left and center fields against Fernando Abad. Gavin (3-1) earned the win, while Romero (0-2) took the loss. Jimmy Cordero earned his third save of the season. For the Leones, González went 3-2 with a triple and two runs; Rodríguez went 2-0 with one RBI, one run, and one walk, and Mateo went 4-1 with one driven in. For the Estrellas, Martínez went 3-1 with his home run, one RBI and one run; Robinson Canó went 3-1. With the victory, the Escogido places its mark at 9-12, while the Estrellas fall to 10-12. The Lions return home this Wednesday to face the Tigres del Licey at 7:15 PM.
