Los Mameyes community members demand the reopening of the Leger Matos Clinic after being closed for more than a year

Santo Domingo.– Residents, community leaders, and social organizations from the Los Mameyes sector made an urgent call to the national authorities to intervene in the face of the prolonged closure of the Clínica Dres. Leger Matos, a health center that has been closed for more than a year and which, according to the community, was a key piece for the medical care of people with limited resources.

According to health authorities, the closure of the center occurred after detecting irregularities in the performance of medical procedures not contemplated in its authorization, which led to the application of the regulations established in the General Health Law and the regulations governing the operation of medical centers in the country. However, community members claim that the measure has had a direct and negative impact on the quality of life of hundreds of families in sectors such as Los Mameyes, Isabelita, Villa Duarte, La Tablita and surrounding areas, where many citizens depended on the clinic to receive basic care, even without having economic resources.

Pastor Asia Ramírez, resident and community leader, stated that the closure of the center has left the population in a state of vulnerability, denouncing that many people do not have money to go to private clinics or receive timely attention in public hospitals. "This was the town's clinic, here people were treated with and without money. Today many are in need and at risk," she said. Other residents, some with more than three decades linked to the sector, pointed out that the clinic operated for years as a community reference center and demanded that an official commission be sent to investigate the situation, evaluate the current conditions of the establishment and determine possible ways for its reopening or regularization. The community reiterated its call to the President of the Republic, the National Congress, and health authorities to seek an urgent solution that guarantees the right to health of the inhabitants of the area, while asking for sensitivity to the economic reality faced by hundreds of families.
