Colombian professor who disappeared on January 2 in Mexico found alive

Mexico City,.- Leonardo Ariel Escobar Barrios, the Colombian teacher who was reported missing since January 2, was found alive this Friday in the municipality of Juárez, in the northern state of Nuevo León, reported the Attorney General's Office (FGJ) of the state.

"The #FiscaliaNL reports that thanks to the coordinated efforts of the state and federal security authorities, the Colombian citizen, Leonardo Ariel Escobar Barrios, was located alive in the municipality of Juarez, N.L," stated the FGJ, which did not provide further details.

The Jesuit University System (SUJ) had previously reported on the disappearance of Escobar Barrios, a collaborator of the Iberoamericana University of Puebla, which occurred on January 2nd in the municipality of Apodaca, Nuevo León. According to the text, the professor was allegedly detained on December 31, 2025, at the General Mariano Escobedo International Airport in Monterrey City by agents of the National Migration Institute, the National Guard, and the Apodaca Municipal Police. Following the alleged detention, the academic stopped having contact with his family on the morning of January 2nd. "What we know is that this person was brought before the Civic Court; they were there for a few hours, I believe 36 hours. Subsequently, they are released. And from there, there is testimony that they are seen wandering around the area, that is the last visual contact that is had," pointed out the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) without giving further details. So far, the authorities have not reported what happened to Escobar Barrios during his disappearance or in what conditions he was found. The disappearance of the academic provoked social mobilizations in the central state of Puebla, where students and staff of the Iberoamericana University demanded his appearance alive,
