A suspected drone attack attributed to Iran hit this Tuesday against the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) station of the U.S. in the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, causing the partial collapse of the roof of the offices inside the U.S. embassy complex and filling the interior with smoke, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by The Washington Post.
According to the newspaper, both the U.S. and Saudi Arabian governments confirmed that two drones hit the complex, although they did not publicly detail that the intelligence center was one of the targets. The CIA declined to comment. You may be interested in: http://Trump threatens to cut trade with Spain over its stance on the Iran war
An internal State Department alert, obtained by the newspaper, indicated that part of the embassy's roof collapsed and that the interior was contaminated by smoke. The building suffered "structural damage" and staff "continue to shelter in place", while the extent of the incident is being assessed. There are no indications of injured agents. The attack occurs within the framework of Tehran's expanded retaliatory measures following the bombing campaign by the US and Israel against Iranian targets. Although the strike would represent a limited setback for the intelligence presence in Saudi Arabia, former CIA officials cited by the media indicated that there are replacement mechanisms and close cooperation with Saudi authorities to sustain operations.
