Trump announces new 30% tariffs for Mexico

Washington.- The President of the United States, Donald Trump, published this Saturday a letter addressed to the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, in which he announces that he will impose new tariffs of "30% on Mexican products sent to the United States, apart from all sectoral tariffs", starting August 1st.

In the letter, the president explains that these tariffs could be modified, "up or down", depending on the relations between the United States and Mexico.

Trump slams Mexico for its "failure to stop the cartels, who are made up of the most despicable people to have walked the Earth, and the drugs flowing into our country." Trump also points out that if for any reason Mexico decides to increase its tariffs in retaliation, the U.S. will add the amount its neighbor decides to the 30% tariff. "As you know, there will be no tariffs if Mexico or companies from your country decide to manufacture products in the United States. In fact, we will do everything possible to obtain approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely," explains the U.S. president in his letter, which he shared today on his social network, Truth Social. Trump also points out in the letter that Mexico has "helped the United States protect the border, but what Mexico has done is not enough" and has to do more to "protect the border" and to prevent the arrival of the drug fentanyl to the United States. "If Mexico manages to challenge the cartels and stop the flow of fentanyl, we will consider adjusting this letter," notes the Republican president.
