  • 1822: The crime of Las Vírgenes de Galindo occurs. Haitian soldiers brutally murder Mr. Andrés Andujar and his daughters Ana, Águeda, and Marcelina Andujar y de Lara near Santo Domingo.

International: May 29th Anniversaries

  • 1453: Constantinople is taken by the Turks, ending the Byzantine Empire.
  • 1856: Inauguration of the telegraph line between Caracas and La Guaira, the first to operate in Venezuela.
  • 1934: The United States and Cuba sign a treaty that includes the abolition of the Platt Amendment and the total independence of the island.
  • 1953: New Zealander Edmund P. Hillary, accompanied by the Sherpa Tensing Norgay, ascends, for the first time, to the summit of Everest.
  • 1966: The Azteca Stadium in Mexico City is inaugurated.

  • 2020: A prosecutor charges former Argentine President Mauricio Macri and his former intelligence chief with alleged espionage.
  • 2021: Thousands of people demonstrate in more than 200 cities in Brazil against President Jair Bolsonaro, and "for life", with more vaccines and aid to the poor to face the pandemic.
  • 2023: Former Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes (2009-2014) is sentenced to 14 years in prison for crimes during his term.
