Your role in the independence struggle

Sánchez was one of the most important leaders of the movement that sought to liberate the eastern part of the island from Haitian rule. He was an active member of the secret society La Trinitaria, founded by Juan Pablo Duarte in 1838. This organization aimed to prepare the Dominican people to achieve their independence. When Duarte was in exile, Sánchez took on the responsibility of leading the revolutionary movement in the country. His leadership was key to organizing the patriots and coordinating the actions that culminated in the proclamation of Dominican independence.

Declaration of Independence

On February 27, 1844, in the historic Puerta del Conde, Sánchez proclaimed the independence of the Dominican Republic. At that moment, after the famous gunshot of Matías Ramón Mella, Sánchez was the one who raised the Dominican flag and proclaimed the birth of the new free and sovereign nation. This act marked the beginning of the country's republican life and established Sánchez as a fundamental figure in Dominican history.

Defense of national sovereignty

After independence, Sánchez continued to defend Dominican sovereignty against different threats. During the following years, the country faced internal conflicts and external pressures. Sánchez remained faithful to the ideals of freedom and independence promoted by Duarte and the Trinitarians.

When in 1861 the country was annexed to Spain by the government of Pedro Santana, Sánchez firmly opposed that decision. From exile he organized an armed movement to restore national independence.

Capture and Death

In his attempt to start the fight against Spanish annexation, Sánchez returned to Dominican territory with a group of patriots. However, he was captured by the Spanish authorities and sentenced to death. On July 4, 1861, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez was shot in San Juan de la Maguana along with several of his companions. Before dying, he made clear his love for the homeland and his commitment to the freedom of the Dominican people, becoming a martyr of the nation.
