New Delhi.- The Indian government approved this Wednesday the candidacy of Ahmedabad, the main city of the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, a strategic step and a large-scale rehearsal for the country's main goal: to host the 2036 Olympics.

The chosen city is located in the western state of Gujarat, considered Modi's political stronghold, which he governed for over a decade.

The official justification for the bid focuses on the city's modern infrastructure, whose emblem is the Narendra Modi Stadium, one of the largest in the world, host of the 2023 Cricket World Cup final and named in honor of the Indian nationalist leader. The same city is the nation's main option for the candidacy for the 2036 Olympic Games. The Commonwealth Games are a multi-sport event held every four years, bringing together athletes from 72 countries and territories that make up the Commonwealth of Nations, mostly former British colonies. The quote also implies the arrival of thousands of coaches, technical officials, tourists, and media. The Indian Executive authorized the financial and logistical guarantees necessary for the candidacy which, if realized, would serve India as a global showcase. According to the government's statement, it is "an opportunity to benefit local companies, generate income and open the country to the world". This bid for 2030 aligns directly with the country's ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games, with Ahmedabad also as its main option. This dual objective seeks to definitively consolidate India as a sporting and organizational power on the world stage.
