Antalya, Turkey. – The Ukrainian team took a firm step this Friday in the Davis Cup series by winning the two singles matches against the Dominican Republic, placing themselves just one win away from advancing to the World Group I.

In the first match of the day, Vladyslav Orlov found no opposition to overcome the Dominican Roberto Cid, whom he defeated with scores of 6-2, 6-1. The early advantage gave confidence to the European team in the tie held in Turkey. Later, in a high-intensity duel, Vyacheslav Bielinskyi defeated Peter Bertrán in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. Although Bertrán managed to force the tiebreak after saving three match points, Bielinskyi knew how to react and sealed the victory to put the series 2-0 in favor of Ukraine. With this result, the Ukrainians lead the World Group II tie and are close to promotion to Group I, one of the most prestigious instances of the team competition in the tennis circuit. The action will continue this Saturday, September 13th, with the doubles match, scheduled for 4:00 AM, Dominican time. Ukraine will present Oleksii Krutykh and Oleksandr Ovcharenko, while Roberto Cid and Peter Bertrán will compete again for the Dominican Republic. According to Dominican captain Jhonny Berrido, in case the Quisqueyan pair manages to win in doubles, the series would extend to Sunday, when Cid and Bertrán would return to the court to play the remaining singles matches. The winning country will obtain the right to compete in Group I of the Davis Cup World Group, a significant leap for the international projection of any team.
