Santo Domingo. – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic announced this Tuesday that the Government decided not to extend an invitation to Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela for the X Summit of the Americas, scheduled for December 4 and 5 in Punta Cana. In a statement, it was explained that, although the Dominican pro tempore presidency had expressed in 2023 the interest of organizing an inclusive summit, the current context of political polarization forced to prioritize the broadest possible participation, guaranteeing the success of the forum.

The Chancellery recalled that the three countries also did not participate in the last edition of the meeting, because they are not part of the Organization of American States (OAS). It also stressed that this decision responds to a strictly multilateral criterion and does not affect the bilateral relations of the Dominican Republic with each of those States. In that sense, the institution highlighted that the ties with Cuba remain "historic, solid and excellent", with Nicaragua they are "cordial" within the framework of regional spaces such as SICA and Celac, while with Venezuela there are historic ties, although diplomatic relations are currently suspended after the questioned presidential elections in June. The Dominican government concluded that the measure seeks to ensure the highest level of representativeness and political dialogue at the Summit, reaffirming its commitment to a successful and far-reaching hemispheric forum.
