DETROIT — Logan Gilbert once again showed why he is one of the Mariners' most reliable pitchers. The right-hander took the mound at Comerica Park with the mission of putting Seattle ahead in the American League Division Series, and he fulfilled it with flying colors by leading his team to an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers, giving them a 2-1 lead in the series.

Gilbert, who invokes his alter ego “Walter” when pitching with intensity, dominated an offense known for its grit and aggressiveness. He allowed only one run in a solid performance, striking out seven with a splitter that baffled the home batters. "Walter" took control of the mound from the second inning and didn't let go. His serenity off the field contrasted with the ferocity with which he attacked the strike zone, controlling the pace of the game from the start. On the offensive, Seattle backed their starter with an explosive production. Timely hits and constant pressure on the opposing pitching were key to bringing the club closer to a historic goal: advancing to their fourth American League Championship Series and the first since 2001. The Mariners, who are looking to end their drought of never having played in a World Series, could seal their spot with one more victory. Seattle, with its combination of dominant pitching and balanced offense, looks closer than ever to taking that expected step to the next level.
