SANTO DOMINGO. – President Luis Abinader described as “very distressing” and “very sad” the case of the Haitian girl Stephora Anne-Mircie Joseph, 11 years old, who died during a school excursion in Santiago, and assured that he fully trusts the actions of the Public Ministry to guarantee justice.

During his weekly meeting with the press, “La Semanal”, the president was questioned about the coercive measures requested against four employees of the educational center where the minor studied and about whether the Government would guarantee justice in the face of the commotion generated in public opinion.

"That is a very painful, very sad case, which has moved the whole country," expressed Abinader. He pointed out that the Public Ministry has already taken action and that the Ministry of Education is also working to reinforce controls and prevent similar situations from happening again.

The president rejected that the case should be viewed from an origin or skin color approach, and assured that the investigation should be handled exclusively from the legal framework.

“This is not a racist country; this is a mixed-race country in more than 80%. What I see here is that there is a girl and that it is a tragedy. The Public Ministry has to investigate and make decisions according to the law, regardless of any color and any nationality,” he stated.
