Putin expresses his support for Maduro in the face of growing external pressure against Venezuela

The President of Russia, Vladímir Putin, held a telephone conversation this Thursday with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, reports the Kremlin. Amid growing external pressure, the Russian head of state expressed his support for Caracas. "Vladimir Putin expressed his solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reaffirmed his support for the course of Nicolas Maduro's government, aimed at defending national interests and sovereignty under conditions of increasing external pressure."

"The heads of state exchanged views on issues related to the future development of friendly Russian-Venezuelan relations within the framework of the strategic partnership and cooperation treaty that entered into force in November 2025," the statement reads. "The mutual will to consistently implement joint projects in the commercial-economic, energy, financial, cultural-humanitarian and other fields was confirmed," the text emphasized. The conversation between the two leaders takes place amidst the unprecedented aggression that the U.S. is exerting against Venezuela. Washington accused – without presenting evidence – Caracas of being a source of drug trafficking and promised on several occasions that it will carry out ground military operations not only against Venezuelan territory, but also against other states in the region. As the most recent step in its pressure, the U.S. seized a ship with Venezuelan oil. Venezuela, in turn, strongly rejects all accusations of drug trafficking and demands an end to the aggression. "From Venezuela we ask and demand the cessation of the illegal and brutal interventionism of the US Government in Venezuela and Latin America. From Venezuela we demand: enough of regime change policies, coups d'état and invasions in the world," Maduro reiterated this Wednesday. Russia and Venezuela reaffirm the "strategic, solid and ascending" nature of their ties Meanwhile, the Government of Venezuela reported that both leaders "reaffirmed the strategic, solid and ascending character of bilateral relations, based on cooperation, friendship and mutual respect". In a statement published on Telegram by the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, it is stated that the Russian president "firmly and categorically ratified his support and backing for President Nicolás Maduro in the national efforts to consolidate peace, political stability, economic development and social protection of the Venezuelan people."
