U.S. Embassy in Haiti issues security alert for "intense gunfire" in the capital

Port-au-Prince.- The United States Embassy in Haiti, located in Port-au-Prince, issued a security alert this Saturday to "inform U.S. citizens that security operations are underway" north, northeast, and south of the embassy, and stated that "intense gunfire has been reported in the area." Furthermore, he indicated that U.S. government personnel have suspended all travel.

He also reported that the embassy remains open to assist with emergency services, and asked citizens to "avoid the area" and "follow the news in local media to stay informed." For the moment, the Haitian authorities have not reported on this alleged operation. This Friday, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (Binuh) announced that at least 5,915 people died and another 2,708 were injured in this country in 2025 due to gang violence and operations by security forces to combat it. The Binuh report also detailed that at least 1,523 people died and another 806 were injured between October and December of last year. On January 14th, Haitian authorities announced that a house belonging to the criminal leader Jimmy Cherisier, alias 'Barbecue', was destroyed by a kamikaze drone during an operation by the Haitian National Police at the gang leader's headquarters in Delmas 6, in the center of Port-au-Prince.
