Santo Domingo.- A judge of the First Instruction Court of the Judicial District of La Romana sentenced a man to one year in prison and a fine of 25 minimum wages for poisoning more than a dozen dogs, a cat and several chickens in that province.
Eduardo Corporán De Aza was sentenced to the maximum penalty established for such cases in Law 248-12 on Animal Protection and Responsible Ownership. Said rule punishes with one year in prison those accused of these acts and two years if the person is a repeat offender in these acts. Corporán De Aza served two months of pretrial detention for the case. The sentence establishes the suspension of the remaining ten months, during which the sentenced person must submit to several rules established in article 41 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The National Animal Protection link of the Public Ministry, Roxanna Reyes Acosta, valued the conviction and highlighted that the results were obtained in record time after the regrettable events were recorded last June. The investigation was carried out by prosecutor Yalissa Marina Candelario Rijo. The file indicates Corporán De Aza as responsible for the poisoning death of five puppies and a chihuahua, as well as a cat and several hens, which occurred in the mentioned sector on June 1, 2025. Subsequently, the neighbors found another dog with severe burns on its body, which also triggered its death.
