James Lovell, commander of the historic Apollo 13, dies at 97

Washington, USA. – American astronaut James Arthur Lovell, Jr., known as James Lovell, famous for commanding the Apollo 13 mission and guiding it safely back after an explosion in space, died at the age of 97, according to the NASA.

Lovell, who also participated in the pioneering Apollo 8 mission, was one of the most recognized faces of the space program of United States and the first human being to travel twice to the Moon, although he never managed to set foot on it. In a statement, NASA praised its decisive role in one of the most critical moments in space history: “It transformed a potential tragedy into a technical and human triumph”, the agency highlighted. The Apollo 13 mission, launched in April 1970, suffered an explosion more than 300,000 kilometers from Earth, forcing Lovell and his colleagues Jack Swigert and Fred Haise to improvise a return route under extreme conditions. Their famous phrase, “Houston, we have a problem”, was etched in the collective memory as a symbol of composure and leadership in the face of adversity.

The odyssey was followed by millions of people around the world and later immortalized in cinema with the film Apollo 13 (1995), where Tom Hanks played Lovell. Born on March 25, 1928, Lovell dedicated much of his life to flying, starting as a naval pilot before being selected by NASA in 1962. He participated in four space missions: Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13. On Apollo 8, he was part of the first crew to orbit the Moon and capture the iconic image known as Earthrise, which showed Earth rising above the lunar horizon for the first time. Following his retirement from NASA and the Navy in 1973, Lovell went into the private sector, wrote his memoirs (Lost Moon), and actively participated in educational and scientific outreach programs.
James Lovell
His family, in an emotional message, remembered him as a man of faith, integrity, and optimism: “He leaves us his example of life, his sense of humor and the way he made us feel capable of achieving the impossible. He was truly unique.” James Lovell passes away as one of the great icons of space exploration, remembered not only for his technical feats, but also for his composure, leadership, and vision in moments where life hung by a thread.
