New York, USA - Weather authorities issued an extreme heat warning that will be in effect until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, due to the dangerous combination of heat and humidity affecting the entire city of New York. The actual temperature is expected to exceed 35 °C (95 °F) in the afternoon, with heat indexes that could reach up to 43 °C (110 °F). From the early hours of the morning, the thermometers have been rising. At 9:00 a.m. 29 °C were already recorded, and the temperature is expected to reach its maximum point between 1:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon, with mostly sunny skies throughout the day. Extreme heat can pose a serious health risk, especially for children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing medical conditions. Therefore, the municipal government has opened cooling centers in various parts of the city. Residents can call 311 for information on the nearest locations. The National Weather Service urged the population to take precautions, avoiding outdoor physical activities during the hours of greatest solar intensity, staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and staying in cool or air-conditioned places. This event is part of a heat wave affecting a large part of the northeastern United States and is expected to continue, at least, until mid-week.
