Edgar Allan García, a reference in Ecuadorian literature, passes away

Guayaquil.- The renowned Ecuadorian writer, poet, and cultural manager Edgar Allan García passed away this Sunday, July 27th, at the age of 66, according to his family and the Ministry of Culture of Ecuador. García, originally from Guayaquil and residing in Quito, is the author of more than 70 literary works, many of them aimed at girls, boys, and adolescents. Titles such as Rebululú, Patatús, Cazadores de sueños, Leyendas del Ecuador and Palabrujas have become required references within children's and young adult literature in the region. Throughout his career, Edgar Allan García received numerous national and international awards, such as the Darío Guevara Mayorga Children's Literature Award, the Ismael Pérez Pazmiño National Award, the Pablo Neruda Poetry Award, and the Plural Short Story Award. His work has been part of the Ecuadorian educational system, solidifying his role as a reader trainer from an early age.

His most recent distinction, the Ibero-American Cervantes Chico Award 2025, he received it on July 22nd. With this award, García became the third Ecuadorian to obtain this recognition granted by the City Council of Alcalá de Henares, Spain, following in the footsteps of Edna Iturralde (2020) and María Fernanda Heredia (2023). According to local media, García was battling cancer, a disease that ultimately silenced his voice, but not his legacy. His wake will be held this Monday at the Los Lirios funeral home in Quito, while the funeral ceremony will take place on Tuesday, July 29th.
