Truck crashes into commercial building, causing fire in Suffolk, Virginia

Suffolk, Virginia.- A commercial building suffered severe damage this Friday morning after a pickup truck crashed into the structure and caught fire in the 500 block of North Main Street, reported the Suffolk City Fire and Rescue Department in Virginia. The accident occurred shortly after 7:00 a.m., when the vehicle first hit a power pole and then the building identified as Colonial Building. The vehicle fire quickly spread to the building, generating visible flames from the roof at the time of the firefighters' arrival. The emergency units managed to control and extinguish the fire approximately one hour later. The driver of the van was able to get out on his own and was transferred to a trauma center with serious injuries, according to the authorities.

As a result of the impact against the power lines, around 1,000 customers in central Suffolk were left without electricity service. Dominion Energy indicated that as of 10:30 a.m. there was still no estimated time for the restoration of the supply. The Fire Department is investigating the causes of the fire, while the Suffolk Police are keeping the investigation into the accident open, from which no other injured persons were reported.
