Washington.- The president of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Thursday about his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that "he knows more than anyone about rigged elections".
The Republican uttered these words at the beginning of a meeting, while insisting on his false accusation that the 2020 elections, in which he lost to Joe Biden, were fraudulent. You may be interested in: Trump issues a warning to Russia
"He knows about rigged elections better than anyone," Trump added with a half-smile, pointing his finger at Erdogan, who did not respond to the comment.
The U.S. leader did not offer further details on what he was referring to, although he highlighted that both have been "friends for a long time." He expressed his respect for the Turkish leader, described him as "a tough guy," and assured that he does "an incredible job" in his country. The opposition in Turkey expresses growing concern for democracy in the country, especially after the arrest of the mayor of Istanbul and main opposition leader, the social democrat Ekrem İmamoğlu, accused of falsifying his university degree, a case that has generated protests in the streets. Erdogan, president of Turkey since 2014 and prime minister between 2003 and 2014, has been noted for consolidating an increasingly authoritarian style of government.
