This congress consolidates the bases for generating more foreign currency for the country through the exposure of health tourism

Santo Domingo.- During the inauguration of the 7th International Congress of Health and Wellness Tourism, the vice president of the Dominican Association of Health Tourism (ADTS), Amelia Reyes, informed that health tourism generated more than 1.3 billion dollars in revenue for the country in 2022.

Reyes underlined that the value chain of health tourism is one of the broadest in the country, as a health tourist consumes between 6 and 7 times more than a traditional tourist.

“While it is true that we have almost more than 300 thousand health tourists coming to the country, there are more Dominicans who have the opportunity to benefit from the technology, the quality of services and the preparation of our professionals,” Reyes highlighted.

Furthermore, 70% of these visitors travel accompanied, which boosts sectors such as transportation, hospitality, gastronomy, and entertainment. "The health tourist comes with an accompanying person who visits restaurants, uses transportation, stays in resorts and, in many cases, takes the opportunity to enjoy the country's tourist offerings. When they leave satisfied, they not only leave income for healthcare, but also leave prestige and competition based on quality," he affirmed.

He also highlighted that, during the congress, key topics such as the impact of artificial intelligence on health, leadership in medical tourism, financing for the expansion of the sector, and international accreditations that certify the quality of Dominican services will be addressed. "This event is of great relevance, not only because of the figures represented by health tourism, but because it elevates Dominican medicine and projects the country as a quality benchmark in Latin America," concluded Reyes Mora.
