Water skiing and taekwondo bring RD's medal count to 18 at the Bolivarian Games

LIMA, Peru. The Dominican Republic added four new medals this Friday in the sixth day of the XX Bolivarian Games, thanks to the silver medal won by Andrea Pigozzi in water skiing and the three bronzes obtained by taekwondo at the beginning of that discipline.

With these results, the Dominican delegation accumulates 18 medals: 1 gold, 6 silver and 11 bronze. In addition, the men's field hockey team finished in fourth position, while fencing was out in the quarterfinals. In artistic gymnastics, Wilfri Manuel García advanced to two finals scheduled for this Saturday.

Silver for Andrea Pigozzi in water skiing

In the competitions held at the Club Náutico Bujama Lacus, Andrea Pigozzi took the silver medal in men's jump, achieving a record of 49.90 meters.
The Chilean Sergio Barrientos Fernández dominated the event with 56.20 meters, while José Browne Bezanilla obtained the bronze with 46.40 meters. Dominican Paolo Pigozzi finished fourth with 45.80 meters. In the figures modality, Paolo finished fifth with 2,360 points after two falls that affected his execution. Andrea did not advance to the final, finishing in 12th position with 200 points. In slalom, Andrea was fifth and Paolo sixth, while Francesca Pigozzi finished fifth in women's figures, fourth in jump (28.10 meters) and fourth in slalom.

Taekwondo brings three bronze medals

In the Ayacucho Convention and Exhibition Center, three Dominicans took to the podium at the opening of the taekwondo:

• Pedro Luis Martínez – bronze (-68 to -80 kg)

He won by technical knockout (RSC) against Luis Acosta (Venezuela) in the quarterfinals, but fell 1-2 in the semifinals against the Colombian Miguel Trejos.

• Saúl Taveras – bronze (58 to -68 kg)

Defeated 2-1 Elvio Costas (Bolivia) and lost 0-2 in the semifinals against Cristian Olivero (Chile).

• María Peña – bronze (49 to 57 kg)

Won 2-0 against Alicia Valdez (Paraguay) in the quarterfinals and lost 0-2 to Alexmar Sulbarán (Venezuela) in the semifinals. Athlete Vanessa Lara did not advance past the quarterfinals in -49 kg.

Field hockey finishes fourth

The men's team fell in a penalty shootout 2-3 against Peru in the bronze medal match, after a 3-3 draw in regulation time. They scored for RD in the match Francisco Javier García Peña (2 goals) and Bladis Quezada Cuevas (1). The match was decided at the Andrés Avelino Cáceres Sports Complex in Villa del Triunfo. Chile won the gold and Venezuela, the silver.

Fencing is out in the quarterfinals

The men's sabre duo, made up of Gabriel Alfau Laracuente and Héctor Palacios Murillo, fell 38-45 to Peru in the quarterfinals. In individual:
  • Gabriel Alfau finished seventh overall after two victories.
  • Héctor Castro Linares was twelfth without victories.

Artistic gymnastics qualifies for finals

The gymnast Wilfri Manuel García advanced to the finals of floor and vault, to be held this Saturday at the Gymnastics Coliseum of Villa El Salvador.
  • Floor: 8th place with 12,566 points
  • Jump: 9th place with 13,250 points
