Marlins and Cubs agree to trade involving Edward Cabrera

Miami.– The Miami Marlins reached a trade agreement with the Chicago Cubs that will send right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera to the Chicago organization, in exchange for a package of prospects led by outfielder Owen Caissie, sources informed MLB.com this Wednesday.

According to the report, the Marlins will receive Caissie, the Cubs' top prospect and number 47 in baseball according to MLB Pipeline, in addition to Dominican infielders Cristian Hernández, Chicago's number 11 prospect, and Edgardo de León. The deal has not yet been officially confirmed by either team. Cabrera is in his first year of salary arbitration eligibility and will remain under contractual control of the acquiring club until the end of the 2028 season. The Dominican right-hander, who will turn 28 in 2026, signed with the Marlins as part of the international class of 2015. Throughout his first campaigns in the Major Leagues, he showed notable potential thanks to the quality of his repertoire, but his development as a starter was limited by recurrent control problems and a history of injuries, which included persistent blisters and discomfort in his throwing elbow. Between 2021 and 2024, Cabrera accumulated 4.3 bWAR, with an ERA+ of 102, a WHIP of 1.347, 5.1 walks per nine innings and 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings, in 63 appearances, 61 of them as a starter. In the 2023 season, when Miami was fighting for a postseason spot, the pitcher was sent to Triple-A and was not used in the National League Wild Card Series, mainly due to his difficulties with control. His performance took a positive turn in 2025, the year in which he recorded the best numbers of his career: 26 starts, 137.2 innings pitched, 150 strikeouts, 3.1 walks per nine innings and a ratio of 3.13 strikeouts per walk. He closed the season with an ERA+ of 125 and managed to complete at least seven innings in four starts, something he had only achieved on three occasions during his first four seasons. Between May 4 and August 8, Cabrera maintained an ERA of 2.22, the third-best in the National League and the fourth-best in all of Major League Baseball in that period, only surpassed by Paul Skenes, Cristopher Sánchez and Framber Valdez. However, the season also included episodes related to his health. The pitcher left an opening on July 11 due to discomfort in his right elbow, although he avoided the injured list thanks to the All-Star break. Subsequently, he left his presentation on August 30 early due to a sprain in the same elbow, before returning to make two starts in the final stretch of the schedule, including the team's last one, in which he pitched five scoreless innings.
