Santo Domingo.- The deputy for the province of Elías Piña, Luis Enrique Castillo, highlighted this Thursday the value that it represents for the Dominican Republic to be the venue for the First Open Justice Conference,
meeting that brings together delegations from the Netherlands, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Spain and other nations.
“We are proud that our country has been the host of this great conference with so many important countries and experts on the subject,” Castillo expressed.
The legislator spoke of the need to move towards greater levels of transparency and efficiency in justice, while valuing the recent approval of the Penal Code by the National Congress.
"The Penal Code is a piece that had been discussed for 30 or 40 years and finally the decision was made to approve it. It is an important political decision for the stability of the nation," he said.
Castillo explained that the new regulations toughen sanctions against criminality, raising the maximum penalty to 60 years in prison.
"Those who commit crimes have to be very careful about what they are going to do. We are no longer going to have that citizen who committed a crime, who was given 30 years and then went out to commit another one," he affirmed.
Finally, the deputy highlighted the interest shown by the President of the Republic, who participated in the conference, as a sign of the Government's commitment to a more transparent justice system and a safer society.
