Disney canceled a sequel to "Monsters, Inc." that already had a story and release date

A sequel to the successful animated film Monsters, Inc. was in development for several years, but was ultimately canceled before reaching theaters. The project, which was titled “Monsters Inc. 2: Lost in Scaradise”, was going to continue the story of the beloved characters Mike and Sulley, although it never came to fruition. The film was being developed by The Walt Disney Company through its studio Circle Seven Animation, created to produce sequels to Pixar films while both companies maintained differences over their distribution agreement in the early 2000s. A tentative release date had even been set for March 27, 2009. According to the story that had been proposed, James P. Sullivan (Sulley) would become the new director of the scare company and would feel nostalgic for his friend Boo. Along with his inseparable companion Mike Wazowski, he would decide to travel to the human world to try to reunite with the girl. However, upon arrival they would discover that Boo no longer lives in her old house, which would lead them to be trapped in the world of humans while trying to find her. During their adventure, the villain Randall would also reappear, who would temporarily join them in a plot that would include chases, comedic situations, and new scenarios outside the world of monsters.

The project was canceled in 2006, when Disney fully acquired Pixar and decided to close the Circle Seven Animation studio. Following this decision, all projects being developed there were discarded, including the sequel to Monsters, Inc. Years later, Pixar revisited the franchise but with a different idea. Instead of a direct continuation, the studio released the prequel Monsters University in 2013, which tells how Mike and Sulley met during their university years. Although that sequel never saw the light of day, the story behind its cancellation continues to arouse curiosity among fans of one of the most beloved animated films in cinema.
