Robbie Ray throws a complete game and the Giants beat the Diamondbacks 7-2 to split the series

PHOENIX. — Robbie Ray looked dominant this Thursday by pitching his first complete game in eight years, and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 to split the four-game series at Chase Field.

Ray (9-3) retired the first 12 batters of the game and needed just 102 pitches to complete the nine innings. He allowed only three hits —including two solo home runs—, gave one walk and struck out seven. It was his first complete game since 2017. The veteran lefty, who played with the Diamondbacks between 2015 and 2020, faced his former team with great success. Winner of the American League Cy Young Award in 2021 with Toronto, Ray showed glimpses of his best form against a familiar lineup. "It's always special to pitch in this stadium," Ray said after the game. "I have great memories here, but today I came to do my job, and everything worked out."

The Giants' offense backed their starter early. Puerto Rican Heliot Ramos opened the scoring with a double in the first inning, followed by a sacrifice fly from Jung Hoo Lee. The team added two more in the fourth and sealed the victory with three runs in the seventh. Dominican Rafael Devers stood out with three RBIs, while his countrymen Willy Adames and Heliot Ramos contributed multiple hits. Adames finished 4-3 with three runs scored and one RBI. Brandon Pfaadt (8-6) took the loss after allowing four runs in six innings of work. For the Diamondbacks, Venezuelan Eugenio Suárez hit his 27th home run of the year and Dominican Ketel Marte added another home run in the ninth. With this victory, the Giants close the series in Arizona with momentum and remain firm in the fight for the postseason.
