RD stopped receiving 600 thousand tourists due to the war between Russia and Ukraine

Spain. -The Dominican Republic stopped receiving around 600 thousand tourists as a consequence of the war conflict between Russia and Ukraine, a situation that has directly impacted the tourist flow to the country, according to the Minister of Tourism David Collado.

The official explained that the reduction is mainly attributed to the increase in fuel costs, which has made international flights more expensive.

Faced with this scenario, Collado points out that many European tourists have chosen to do internal tourism, staying in destinations such as Madrid, Spain, instead of traveling to the Caribbean. Faced with this decrease, the "Ministry of Tourism" is considering various strategies in coordination with several airlines, with the aim of increasing flight frequency and attracting international visitors again. Among the alternatives proposed is the promotion of sports tourism, as well as the promotion of gastronomic and cultural tourism, initiatives that seek to diversify the Dominican tourism offer and attract new markets. In that context, Collado highlighted that FITUR should not be seen as a social event, but as a strategic platform to attract tourists to the country, whose realization could generate approximately 240 billion pesos for the national economy. In that vein, the authorities continue working on links with airlines and new promotional proposals, in order to mitigate the impact of the international conflict and strengthen the tourism sector, one of the main economic drivers of the Dominican Republic.
