Anniversaries: commemorations and celebrations of March

In the Gregorian calendar, March is the third month of the year and has 31 days. Its name derives from the Latin Martius, which was the first month of the Roman calendar.​ Martius in turn derives from Mars, the Latin name for Mars, Roman god of war.

During March, around the 20th or 21st (depending on the year), one of the two equinoxes of the year occurs. This is the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere and the autumn equinox for the southern hemisphere.

March 4th

World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development. It is celebrated every March 4th. This date arose to celebrate the contribution of engineers in our modern world who have the responsibility to develop new technologies and methods for a better and more sustainable world.

March 5th

World Energy Efficiency Day. It is celebrated every year on March 5th with the purpose of educating the world population about the importance of the efficient use of energy.

March 6

International Sculptor's Day. It is celebrated every March 6th in homage to these creators of artistic works. It was created to commemorate the birth of the Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, and poet Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), known as Michelangelo.

International Women's Day. Every March 8th, this special date is celebrated to distinguish women. Women are simply unique; they represent our maximum expression of kindness and nobility. March 9th

International DJ Day. It is celebrated every March 9th as declared by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as an initiative to get DJs (disc jockeys) from all over the world to donate their pay from this day to help people who need it most.

Birth of Francisco del Rosario Sánchez. Francisco del Rosario Sánchez is one of the great republican heroes in Dominican history. Hero of February 27, 1844, a man of action and, like Duarte, Mella, and others, represents the authentic expression of Dominican identity and patriotic, republican, and revolutionary vocation. His life as a public man was honest, incorruptible, and immaculate and was marked by his brave, reckless, and naive behavior.

March 11th

World Plumbing Day. It is celebrated every March 11th. This date arose as an initiative of the World Plumbing Council to honor the work of plumbers and raise awareness among the world population about the importance of this profession in public health and environmental care.

March 15th

World Consumer Rights Day. In 1983, the United Nations General Assembly established that March 15 of each year would be World Consumer Rights Day, commemorating the speech that US President John F. Kennedy gave in 1962 before the Congress of his country. World Day Against Seal Slaughter. It is held every March 15 to raise awareness among the world's population about the largest massacre of marine animals. According to animal rights organizations, thousands of seals are killed each year by hunters with the aim of obtaining their skins.

March 17th

St. Patrick's Day. St. Patrick's Day is widely celebrated in Ireland, where he is the patron saint, and especially in the United States. Every March 17th, a large parade is organized in New York on Fifth Avenue, in which many people dressed in green participate.

March 19th

The Battle of March 19th. Upon the proclamation of Independence, our country was the scene of different battles, marking a before and after of our freedom proclaimed on February 27, 1844. One of them was that of March 19, 1844, staged in the province of Azua.

Also known as the Battle of Azua, it was the first major battle in defense of Dominican independence.

When Charles Herard learned of the event of February 27, he began to organize his soldiers in order to fight the Dominicans, leaving Port-au-Prince with 30 thousand men divided into three groups of 10 thousand.

International Craftsman Day. This date, also known as Saint Joseph's Day, is celebrated every March 19th. Craftsmen are recognized as skilled people who maintain the art and traditional culture of each region of the world, using their hands to create different new and valuable works. Their work helps to stimulate, develop, and improve our intelligence and creativity.

Spring Equinox. It is the time when the Sun is located in the plane of the Earth's equator. On this date, the duration of day and night practically coincide throughout the Earth, marking the transition from winter to spring in the northern hemisphere and the transition from summer to autumn in the southern hemisphere.

March 20th

National Baker's Day. On March 20th, we celebrate the day of the artists of the primary food of all households, the baker. Bread is what usually accompanies our meals. It is present from breakfast to a grand gala dinner. World Sparrow Day. It is celebrated every March 20th to raise public awareness about the decline of sparrows and other common birds in urban environments. The date is an initiative of the Natural Forever Society of India and other environmental organizations around the world. International Day of Happiness. This date is celebrated every March 20th to promote the pursuit of happiness as a fundamental goal. This date was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on June 28, 2012, to recognize the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal aspirations of human beings.

March 21st

World Poetry Day. This commemoration is celebrated every March 21st and was launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2000 with the aim of recognizing poetic activities and promoting the knowledge of poetry.

World Forestry Day or World Tree Day. March 21st is the first day of autumn in the southern hemisphere and the first of spring in the northern hemisphere. Thus, to give it a simultaneous character around the world, the member states of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) chose, in 1971, this date to celebrate World Forestry Day.

International Color Day. It is celebrated on March 21st of each year. According to the Portuguese Color Association, color is one of the most influential phenomena in people's lives and also one of the channels that contributes most to our knowledge of the external world. International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It is celebrated every March 21st as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in memory of those who died in the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960.

March 22

World Water Day. In 1992, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development declared that March 22 of each year will be World Water Day to raise awareness among the world's population about the conservation and development of water resources. World Sleep Day. This date, celebrated every third Friday of March, draws the world's attention to the various sleep disorders. The date was created in 2008 by the World Association of Medicine.

 March 23

World Meteorological Day. This date is celebrated every March 23rd to commemorate the creation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950, as a United Nations agency to ensure international cooperation in meteorological matters.

March 26

World Climate Day. It is celebrated every March 26th with the aim of raising awareness about the constant climate changes that are happening today and the importance that the climate has in many aspects of human life and ecosystems on the planet.

March 27

Dominican Theater Day. March 27th is celebrated in our country as Dominican Theater Day. We are a culturally active country and that is why we want you to know the origin of this profession that entertains us so much and that many enjoy.

March 30th

Battle of March 30th. Santiago was the scene where the second confrontation between Dominicans and Haitians took place after the national independence was proclaimed on February 27, 1844. This confrontation was known as the Battle of March 30th.
This was one of the patriotic feats post-independence, in which Dominicans defended their sovereignty by fighting against the Haitian army. The Dominican Republic's guard, who fought in Santiago de los Caballeros, was commanded by José María Imbert, along with Pedro Eugenio Pelletier and Fernando Valerio. The Haitian part was led by General Jean-Louis Pierrot. According to historical data, the Dominican combat forces were composed of 400 infantry members, 100 cavalry, 3 cannons, and 3 forts, where only one injury was recorded.
