Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader stated this Monday that in the coming days the situation regarding the general director of the National Police, Ramón Guzmán, who has served two years in office, the maximum time according to the law of that organization, will be known. Abinader was very terse in that regard and said that he always respects the law, but he did not make it clear if he would replace Guzmán Peralta.

Faced with a request from a communicator to keep the police director in office, the ruler stated: "What I can tell you is that we have made progress against crime and we always want to advance further." At that point, he stated that the crime rate in the country is 8.1 per 100,000 inhabitants, second only to El Salvador in the region. "Progress has been made, much more is missing (...) I will see what the law allows us and I reiterate the progress against drug trafficking and crimes, progress for which we have been congratulated by the American DEA on several occasions", the president pointed out. Furthermore, he revealed that next Saturday he will hold a meeting at the National Palace with a representation from the Foreign Relations Committee of the United States House of Representatives.

Regarding this matter, Chancellor Roberto Álvarez elaborated that between 12 and 14 congressmen will converse with Abinader about the situation in the region and in the "neighboring country" (Haiti).

Regarding the government's actions in response to the ravages of Storm Melissa, Abinader said that direct aid in food continues, as well as in the asphalting and repair of local roads. He assured that the authorities are "monitoring" the situation of the refugees. In another part of his statements, offered in the usual Monday meeting he holds with the media at the National Palace, the president said that he again received congratulations from the DEA for his fight against drug trafficking, this time from the deputy director of that office, Daniel Salter, who visited him last week, heading a delegation from the anti-narcotics agency. "We are going to plan and execute much more extensive, much more in-depth actions (against drug trafficking), which will be announced in the coming days, they (the United States) trust quite a bit in our collaboration to combat that and other transnational evils," he assured.
